In my last post, I explored one of the biggest trends of the moment – AI and emerging technologies. I’d now like to take a step back and focus on the critical infrastructure that underpins these transformational technologies – connectivity.

Mobility, flexibility and agility have become table stakes for a successful business and is only possible through powerful and reliable network connectivity. Any loss of connection or downtime can lead to significant financial and commercial consequences. It’s therefore imperative that businesses ensure they have the necessary infrastructure in place to facilitate enterprise connectivity, allowing for greater efficiency, productivity and business growth.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, Cisco predicts that annual global IP traffic will reach 3.3 zettabytes per year by 2021, and the number of devices connected to IP networks will be more than three times the global population by 2021. Furthering this, global analyst house Gartner, predicts $2.2m per minute in IoT spending and one million new IoT devices will be sold every hour by 2021.

Data is fast becoming the lifeblood of modern society, and the importance of the network, fiber and the emerging use of key technologies are becoming ever more prevalent to the efficient functioning of day-to-day life. It’s now more crucial than ever for businesses to ensure they have the appropriate infrastructure in place to underpin the growing IoT environment.

During my career, I have witnessed the speed in which new solutions and advancements arise and completely revolutionise the industry we operate in. This is doubly true for connectivity, with the most recent advancement being the imminent arrival of 5G infrastructure. Specifically, in North America, 5G infrastructure is leading the way in terms of connectivity advancements for businesses.

The coming transition to 5G networking is set to disrupt the business landscape, bringing with it the promise of faster speeds, lower latency and better flexibility – fulfilling the true potential of IoT. Particularly, as the world inevitably becomes more and more reliant on wireless technologies and mobile devices, increased access to digital infrastructure assets and cloud storage is imperative for businesses worldwide.

Reliable, future-proof connectivity is critical to business success today and in the future, and without it, businesses are unable to operate and deliver at the speed and scale required for optimum efficiency. In order to stay relevant, keep up with competition and succeed in a digital world, companies – if not already – are seeing the need to adapt to new connectivity networks.
