VMware Alternative

VMware alternatives that fit your workloads, and a team to migrate them

Proxmox, Aptum's own cloud, or managed VMware. We recommend the one that suits your workloads and run the move.

Illustration of man working on cloud migration project

More than one way to answer the VMware renewal.

VMware costs have become hard to predict, and the renewal is not getting cheaper. There is more than one way forward, and picking the wrong one is expensive too. Aptum recommends the path that suits your workloads, runs the migration, and manages the result afterwards.

You might recognise some of this:

A renewal quote that jumped

Your renewal has come back at a significant increase over last time, with no change in what you run to explain it.

Alternatives you cannot rank

You are evaluating options, but every comparison comes from a vendor with something to sell and none of them are written about your environment.

Paying for features you never use

Some of your workloads carry the full VMware stack without needing anything VMware-specific from it.

A migration you cannot risk

The workloads on VMware tend to be the ones you cannot afford to break, which is what makes staying put feel safer than moving.

Your options

There is more than one right answer here, so we recommend rather than prescribe. Aptum runs all three of these today, which is what puts us in a position to tell you which one suits you.

Proxmox on Aptum Private Cloud

Proxmox on Aptum Private Cloud

The closest experience to VMware, open source, with no Broadcom licensing to renew. Aptum hosts and manages it as a single-tenant private cloud, so your team is not learning it alone.

A team that has migrated production VMware

Aptum has moved production from VMware environments, including one of our own.

We migrated our infrastructure to Proxmox and published the process, the problems and the outcome, so the people guiding your move have done it for themselves as well as for customers. We operate VMware and Proxmox environments today.

Most VMware alternatives hand you the technology and leave you to it. Aptum brings the technology, the people to run it, and the project team to move you onto it.

What you keep hold of after the move

Proxmox and managed VMware are both delivered as Aptum Private Cloud, which Aptum's team hosts, manages and reports on, so the operating model stays consistent through the migration and after it.

If you move onto Aptum's own cloud platform instead, Aptum Prizm comes with it at no extra cost and your team provisions and manages the environment directly.

Why Aptum

Why teams choose Aptum

Aptum has already made this move on its own estate, migrating production workloads from VMware to Proxmox.

Aptum runs VMware, Proxmox and its own cloud platform. If the assessment suggests to stay on VMware, that is a recommendation Aptum can make and deliver.

Technology, people and a migration team

You get the platform, the team that runs it day-to-day, and the project team that moves you onto it.

Renewals you can forecast

Flat monthly pricing, with the visibility to see what you are running and what it costs, so the next renewal holds no surprises.

FAQs

Common questions

What are the alternatives to VMware?

The common routes are Proxmox, an open-source platform whose experience is closest to VMware, KVM, the open-source hypervisor that most provider clouds are built on, or staying on VMware and having somebody else host and manage it. Which one suits you depends on whether your workloads use VMware-specific features, how predictable their demand is, and how much of the running your team wants to keep. In some cases, public cloud may be the right choice.

What are my options if I am leaving VMware or Broadcom?

Move to Proxmox on Aptum Private Cloud, move to Aptum's own cloud platform built on Apache CloudStack and KVM, move to the public cloud, or keep VMware and let Aptum host and manage it. Aptum recommends the path that suits your workloads and runs all three.

Do I have to leave VMware entirely?

No. If you need to stay on VMware, or you depend on features such as vMotion or vSAN, Aptum can host and manage VMware for you, which changes who operates it without changing what you run.

Will I lose features moving to Proxmox or KVM?

For workloads that do not depend on VMware-specific features, no. For the ones that do, managed VMware keeps them where they are. We match the platform to the workload rather than moving everything to one place.

How long does a migration take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the environment, and it runs in phases. The assessment gives you a timeline for your own environment before you commit to anything.

Who runs the new platform, my team or Aptum?

Either, or both. Aptum can wrap managed services around the new environment so your team is not left learning a new hypervisor on its own.

Has Aptum done this before?

Yes. Aptum runs VMware and Proxmox environments for customers today, and migrated its own production infrastructure to Proxmox, publishing the process and the problems along with the outcome.
